Montenegro

We spent four weeks in Kotor, Montenegro, and absolutely loved it. The old town is small, cozy, quaint, and full of charm. The landscape around it, however, is anything but small or gentle. Kotor sits at the edge of a dramatic bay, with mountains that seem to rise straight out of the water and a sea that often turns a stunning shade of green. What makes Kotor so special is that it gives you two very different experiences at once. The old town feels intimate and inviting, while the mountains around it feel bold, vast, and powerful. One moment we’re wandering quiet stone streets or sitting in a sunlit square with a cup of coffee. A few minutes later we’re walking along the bay, looking up at cliffs that seem to rise straight out of the water. That constant movement between comfort and awe, between the gentle and the dramatic, is what keeps Kotor so engaging. It never feels one-note.
